You’re likely going to see more AI-generated content on Facebook, Threads, and Instagram, but it will be labeled.
Meta announced that starting in May, it would label videos and pictures made with AI in the hopes of being more transparent about what content is and how it’s made across its platforms.
Currently, Meta removes AI-generated content when it’s detected, but only “created or altered by AI to make a person appear to say something they didn’t say,” according to a blog post by Monika Bickert, VP of Content Policy at Meta.
As the prior strategy was developed in 2020, prior to the present explosion of AI media, the corporation claims that it has updated its regulations regarding AI-created material in collaboration with its Oversight Board.
“We agree with the Oversight Board’s recommendation that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address manipulated media and avoid the risk of unnecessarily restricting freedom of speech, so we’ll keep this content on our platforms so we can add labels and context,” said Bickert.
Therefore, rather than witnessing a decrease in AI-generated material, we might start to see an increase on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads; nevertheless, Meta intends to use these labels to offer more transparency and “extra context.” The business states that it can provide “more prominent labels” when “altered images, video, or audio create a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance.”
If content breaches any of the company’s other regulations, such as those pertaining to incitement, violence, bullying, harassment, or voter interference, it will still be removed. Content that is rated as False or Altered by its fact-checkers will nonetheless appear lower in your feed and be labeled as such.
Meta pledges to begin tagging content produced by artificial intelligence (AI) in May 2024 and to cease deleting it based only on that justification in July. According to Meta, this will also give people some time to acclimate to the self-disclosure process.
